This district lies south west of Kathmandu and is set in beautiful green hills, dotted with small villages which means that there are also many rural schools. The locations of these habitations are idyllic, many of them commanding extensive views of the Himalayan range, but often devoid of services.
The district town is Tansen, a hill town at 1,350m, which affords fine views of the forested hills, cultivated valleys, fast flowing rivers and the ever present white mountains.
Many different cultures abound here and give rise to a variety of architectural gems (temples, palaces, steep streets) and a variety of handcrafts some of which can be purchased.
Agriculture is the main lifestyle of people and their self sufficiency in living off the land is remarkable.
